Caffeine – Health Guide & Encyclopedia

Caffeine

Caffeine or caffeine is a substance with a stimulating and invigorating effect. Caffeine occurs naturally in stimulants such as coffee or various types of tea. Caffeine belongs to the group of stimulants, with a stimulating (invigorating) effect on the central nervous system and metabolism. Caffeine, especially in the form of coffee, is one of the most commonly consumed foods.

Caffeine healthy or unhealthy?

Caffeine has long been an ingredient in headache pills. The pain-relieving effect of these tablets is largely attributed to the caffeine they contain.

Caffeine and tablets are generally said to have a certain potential for addiction. This has not been scientifically proven, but it is not advisable to continuously take high levels of caffeine in the form of tablets without medical advice.

Caffeine consumed in large quantities over a longer period of time can lead to health problems ( palpitations ). However, there is nothing wrong with a cup or two of coffee, black or green tea. The right enjoyment of coffee or tea is even said to have positive properties for body and soul.

The general opinion that caffeine deprives the body of water is only partially correct. At best, shortly after ingestion, caffeine has an increased diuretic effect. After some time, the body will balance its fluid balance again. So, theoretically, you could cover your fluid needs with just coffee. But only theoretically, from the point of view of a healthy and balanced diet, coffee does not make sense as a thirst quencher. Instead, enjoy your cup of coffee from time to time.

Caffeine for weight loss

Due to the invigorating effect on the metabolism, caffeine actually leads to a slight stimulation of fat burning and thus to increased energy consumption. But everyone who thinks now: coffee wreath with cake and still lose weight, unfortunately we have to disappoint. On the one hand, the burning effect is very low and, on the other hand, caffeine has the property of activating the gastric mucosa, which leads to an increased appetite or feeling of hunger. There is evidence that a few sips of coffee or black tea before endurance sports ( jogging, swimming, walking) stimulate the fat metabolism and thus boost energy consumption. Our tip is: Enjoy your coffee in moderation and use the positive and stimulating atmosphere for activities in the fresh air.

Caffeine for performance enhancement

Caffeine can temporarily increase concentration and reactivity as well as stimulate the cardiovascular system and muscle activity . This explains short-term increases in performance and the elimination of signs of fatigue. Recently, the food industry has increasingly used this effect to market various trend products containing caffeine (cola, energy drinks, mated drinks). These products are a popular refreshment and mixed drink, especially at parties.

Caffeine tablets

As already explained, caffeine has stimulating and stimulating properties. This can temporarily compensate for energy deficits such as tiredness and exhaustion.

Above all, activities with long, monotonous concentration phases can quickly become tiring.

Professional drivers and students like to take caffeine tablets to overcome tiredness. Students state that they can learn more effectively and for longer as a result. Caffeine tablets contain between 50mg and 200mg of pure caffeine (per tablet).

The tablets can be bought over the counter in conventional pharmacies without a prescription. Internet pharmacies now also offer these products from various manufacturers.

For comparison: A normal cup of coffee has between 80mg and 100mg of caffeine. The caffeine content of a cup of coffee is roughly equivalent to that of an average caffeine tablet. Basically, in exceptional cases (e.g. exam preparation), there is nothing wrong with taking caffeine tablets for a short time and in doses.
