Brain – function, structure & symptoms

Brain

The brain is the control center of the human body. It is located in the Skull Cavern .

Definition

The brain (cerebrum) is located in the human skull and is surrounded by meninges . It represents the part of the central nervous system (CNS) that is in the head. The brain is composed primarily of nerve tissue . The brain serves as a switching center and reaches an average weight of 1400 grams in adult males. The weight of the organ in a woman is 1300 grams on average.

Anatomy

The human brain can be divided into two halves. The connection of these two hemispheres occurs through some commissures. In terms of development, the brain is divided into three parts. These are the hindbrain, which is composed of elongated medulla, and the pons and cerebellum (metencephalon or cerebellum).

However, a rough classification into the cerebellum, cerebrum (telencephalon) including cerebral cortex (cortex), diencephalon (diencephalon) and brainstem (truncus cerebri) including post-brain (myelencephalon) and midbrain (mesencephalon) is possible.

The brain is part of the central nervous system, which includes the spinal cord . It is protectively encased by the skull bones and three meninges (meninges of the brain). An important part of the brain are the nerve cells (neurons) and the Gila cells. In addition, there are blood vessels in the brain, as well as cavities that are filled with water. These spaces are called ventricles or cerebral chambers.

The brain also includes the cerebral cortex, which is divided into five lobes. These are the insular lobe, the occipital lobe, the temporal lobe, the parietal lobe, and the frontal lobe.

There is also a white and a gray matter in the brain. The white matter is composed primarily of nerve cell processes and represents the main part. The gray matter is mostly found in the surface area of the cerebral cortex.

Function

The brain is an extremely complex organ. It performs various tasks. The important functions for the personal characteristics of a person, their intelligence, language and the control of movements are located in the frontal lobe.

At the back of the occipital lobe is the visual cortex, which takes care of visual perception, its control and allocation. The diencephalon controls the release of hormones .

The temporal lobe contains cells that play an important role in a person’s memory and emotions. In addition, it contains the understanding of language and the auditory cortex. Through the parietal cells, humans are able to grasp music and abstract mathematics.

The cerebellum takes over the movement programs and ensures that the movement sequences are coordinated. The brainstem contains nerve tracts that connect the brain and spinal cord .

The respiratory center is also located there, which regulates breathing, blood pressure and the cardiovascular system . The pituitary gland (hypophysis) releases hormone precursors or hormones into the bloodstream.

Diseases

Since the brain is extremely diverse, it can also suffer from various dysfunctions and diseases. Stroke is one of the most common impairments. The brain no longer receives enough blood. If there is a lack of oxygen, this leads to the death of the sensitive nerve cells after a short time.

Another brain disease is epilepsy. It is caused by involuntary mass discharges of nerve cells. Brain tumors, which can be benign or malignant, are among the most serious diseases of the brain. Meningitis and encephalitis are also life-threatening.

Alzheimer’s disease is a degenerative brain disease. So far, this disease has not been fully understood, just like Parkinson’s disease. A common brain injury is traumatic brain injury, which includes concussion .

Hello and welcome to my Health Guide & Encyclopedia! My name is Dorothy Farrar, and I'm the founder and main author of this platform.
My passion for health and wellness started at a young age when I became interested in the connection between the food we eat and the way we feel. This fascination led me to study nutrition and dietetics in college, where I learned about the importance of a balanced diet and the impact of various nutrients on the body.
