Organ system

An organ system is a group of organs that are functionally related. The organ systems are not strictly separated from each other, but influence each other. However, the grouping of organs is the basis for a systemic view of the anatomical conditions of the body.

Definition

The term organ system summarizes organs that take on tasks that are aimed at a similar purpose.

In the human body, the organs are divided into the cardiovascular system, the respiratory system, the nervous system , the digestive system , the urogenital system, the endocrine system, the immune system , the lymphatic system, the musculoskeletal system, the sensory organs, the skin and the skin appendages . The blood and the blood-forming organs also represent a separate organ system.

Anatomy

The cardiovascular system, also known as the cardiovascular system, includes the heart and blood vessels . The cardiovascular system can be divided into a low-pressure and a high-pressure system. In the low-pressure system, blood pressure is low. This system includes the smallest blood vessels, the so-called capillaries , the right heart, the vessels of the lungs , the veins of the body and the left atrium of the heart.

The high pressure system includes the left ventricle and arteries . Physiologically, the blood pressure here is between 70 and 120 mmHg. The respiratory system includes all organs related to breathing. On the one hand, there are the upper respiratory tract with the nose , oral cavity and pharynx and on the other hand the lower respiratory tract with the larynx , trachea , bronchi and alveoli .

The term nervous system includes all parts of the human body that serve to perceive, process and control stimuli. Nerve cells , neurons, and glial cells make up the nervous system.

The digestive system includes the organs of the upper digestive tract and the organs of the lower digestive tract. The upper digestive tract includes the oral cavity, tongue , teeth , pharynx, salivary glands , esophagus , and stomach . The lower digestive organs are the small intestine , pancreas , liver , gallbladder , large intestine , and anus .

The organs of the urogenital system are the kidneys , ureter , urinary bladder , and urethra . The endocrine system includes all organs that produce hormones . These include the pituitary , epiphysis, thyroid , the parathyroid and adrenal glands , and the islets of Langerhans of the pancreas . The immune system and the lymphatic system are closely linked.

The immune system includes cells such as granulocytes and macrophages or T-lymphocytes. Since these move in the blood, they are also part of the blood system at the same time. The musculoskeletal system consists of the skeletal system and the skeletal muscles .

Function

Each of the organ systems performs different tasks in the body. During the tasks, it also quickly becomes clear that the functions of the individual organs are closely linked and that none of the organ systems could exist independently. The cardiovascular system serves to maintain blood circulation and thus to supply all other organ systems with blood.

The respiratory system is responsible for breathing and gas exchange. The respiratory system oxygenates the blood and exhales carbon dioxide. The nervous system is responsible for controlling all other organ systems. It influences digestion and breathing, controls heart activity and is a prerequisite for stimulating the muscles. Without the nervous system, no movements would be possible.

Metabolic end products are disposed of with the urine via the urogenital system . The urinary tract is also important for regulating water and electrolyte balance. The genital organs also belong to the urogenital system. These are for reproduction.

Hormones are produced in the endocrine system. Hormones act as messengers in the body and influence numerous organs. The endocrine system is closely related to the nervous system. With the help of the sense organs eyes, ears, nose, tongue and skin, humans are able to absorb stimuli from the environment. The immune system protects the body from foreign substances and pathogens.
