The glutes are a set of muscles , each with a different job and function. With the help of the individual buttock muscles, certain movements can be performed.

Definition

The gluteus musculature is made up of the gluteus maximus, median, and gluteus minor. The individual muscles have differentiated functions, but it is very important that the muscles work together properly.

Anatomy

The gluteus maximus (gluteus maximus) is the largest human muscle, covering the gluteus medius (medius) and gluteus minimus (gluteus minimus). The gluteus maximus is divided into a deep and a superficial part.

The actual muscle is formed by a large number of muscle fibers consisting of muscle fibrils. They contain numerous proteins that are required for muscle movement. The gluteus minor originates at the ala of the ilium and then inserts at the anterior border of the greater trochanter.

The gluteus medius originates from the ilium, iliac crest, and iliac fascia. The individual muscle fibers then form a common tendon that ends on the outside of the thigh. There is also a bursa at the attachment point.

Function

In total, the human body has three gluteal muscles that start at the pelvic girdle . The gluteus maximus is responsible for allowing the trunk to straighten. It also serves as both an abductor (“leader”) and an abductor (“spreader”).

The other buttock muscles are supported by the upper part when abducting, the lower part allows the thigh to be brought closer to the body. Below the large muscle is the gluteus medius, which becomes active when you bend over.

The gluteus medius begins at the ilium and stabilizes the pelvis during running and walking, preventing it from sagging to the free leg side. The front part of the muscle allows the thigh to rotate inwards, while the rear part rotates the thigh outwards.

Below the gluteus medius is the gluteus minor, which performs the same function as the gluteus maximus. It is important that the individual muscles work well together. If the function of one muscle is disturbed, this can also affect the others.

In the gluteal area, paralysis of the gluteus maximus can occur. This severely restricts stretching movements and makes it very difficult for those affected to walk, jump or stand up. In many cases, patients are unable to flex the thigh.

If the middle or small buttock muscle is paralyzed, the so-called waddling gait occurs, in which the pelvis tilts onto the free leg side with every step. The cause of such phenomena of paralysis are mainly intramuscular injections.

The so-called piriformis syndrome can occur in the area of ​​​​the small buttock muscle. The cause of this is usually a one-sided overload due to heavy lifting or a sitting posture.

Constant pressure can also irritate the muscle, another cause is fall injuries in the buttocks area. Those affected then suffer from pain on one side of the body, the buttocks, which often radiates to the thigh. Climbing stairs or straddling the legs is also painful. These are reinforced by prolonged sitting in the car or in front of the screen.

The gluteal muscles can also be affected by inflammation, often caused by bacteria or viruses . These pathogens get into the muscle through an infection , where inflammation occurs, which can also take a chronic course. If the buttock muscles are permanently tense, hardening occurs and the blood vessels are pinched off. This also leads to inflammation and severe pain.
