The bristly taiga root is a plant that strengthens and above all stimulates the immune system and originally comes from Siberia and the neighboring countries. The first clinical studies on the plant were carried out by Russian scientists. In western naturopathy, the bristly taiga root has only been used as a remedy since the second half of the 20th century.
Definition and Occurrence
Bristly taiga root (Eleutherococcus senticosus) is a deciduous shrub belonging to the Araliaceae family. It is also called Siberian ginseng and devil’s bush. The shrub reaches a height of 2 to 7 m, has a grey-brown bark and few branches. The bristly taiga root has oval-shaped leaves and branches with small spikes.
When it flowers in July, the hermaphrodite bristly taiga root bears umbel-like inflorescences with small yellow and purple flowers. The fruits of the bristly taiga root, which grows at an altitude of 800 meters or more, have a blue-black colour. The plant belongs to the group of adaptogenic medicinal plants . This group of medicinal plants contains compounds that increase performance and resistance in a non-specific way.
The plant is found in Siberia, Japan, north-east China, North Korea and Manchuria, where it has been used as a physical and mental tonic for many centuries. Since the middle of the 20th century, the bristly taiga root has been used as a cheap alternative to European ginseng .

The bristly taiga root mainly contains acids and polysaccharides (sugar compounds). The essential components of the medicinal plant include eleutherosides, lignans, phenylpropanes, coumarins, triterpene saponins, sterols, neutral glucans, beta-carotene , vanillin and vitamin E. With a share of 1.7%, chloropenic acid, a caffeic acid derivative, is the most prominent. Among the lignans, it is mainly syringen and liriodendrin that are highly effective.
The bristly taiga root has a wide range of uses. It has a stimulating effect, helps against fatigue and gives strength. Its performance-enhancing effect is very well documented by clinical studies (animal and human experiments). The bristly taiga root increases stamina and improves concentration and adaptability. It also strengthens the immune system and has a blood sugar -lowering effect.
Bristly taiga root is sold as tea, drops, powder, tablets, and capsules. In skin creams it helps against skin aging. Its dried leaves are used to make tea. The roots are powdered and also used as a natural remedy. Users who want to take the tea as a cure boil 2 g of the powdered root with 150 ml of water and leave the brew covered for 10 minutes. After straining, the tea can be drunk. 2 to 3 cups distributed throughout the day are recommended. However, it should be consumed for a maximum of 3 months.
After a break of two months, the patient can carry out another tea cure. Side effects only occur if the natural remedy is overdosed. Pregnant women , breastfeeding women and children under the age of 12 should not use the bristly taiga root. The same also applies to users with heart diseases and patients with fever .
